Oxide ceramic matrix composites offer the potential for long life-time in oxidizing environments. In the present paper, the potential of oxides as matrix for fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (FRCMC) is analyzed considering all three ingredients required: High strength fibers suitable for high temperatures, interfaces allowing fiber debonding during loading, and matrix systems suitable for composite fabrication. The state of development in each of these areas is summarized with respect to high temperature capability of the final composites. Some oxide based systems are already suitable for the use at temperatures <~1200°C. However, further work has to be done to develop composites serving at temperatures up to 1500°C in order to meet the requirements, i.e., for components in engines, turbines, and chemical processing.
