Ceramic oxide preform including aligned of 5cm length at least, a generally continuous, in a vertical direction α alumina fibers, and a method of manufacturing the same. For example, the ceramic oxide preform useful in the manufacture of metal matrix composite material, such as a disk brake which is enhanced in a generally continuous α-alumina fibers.
