Increasing demands are placed on non-destructive testing (NDT) to he sensitive, reliable, reproducible - and cheap. This discussion paper argues that the NDT industry has responded to this challenge and, in particular, has developed technology for high integrity applications. The performance of NDT must be quantified, hut there are significant gaps in our knowledge. Modern NDT provides a powerful capability, but careful management of inspection is needed, controlling the essential variables ofprocedures, equipment and people. This ensures that NDT plays its essential role in the safety case of critical components and delivers value for money.
