Investigation of micro pilot combustion in a stationary gas engine

The objective of this program was to obtain 35 percent brake thermal efficiency (BTE) based on fuel higher heating value with NOx emission levels below 0.7 g/bhp-hr. The demonstration engine was a Superior 1706 rated at 400 hp at 1200 rpm. Threedesign alternatives were tested: two micro pilot prechamber (MPPC) configurations and one micro pilot open chamber configuration. The results demonstrated that the micro pilot technology could achieve low emissions and high efficiency, depending on thedesign and implementations of the technology. One micro pilot prechamber configuration tested met the objectives of the program. The prechamber versions obtained lower NOx levels than the open chamber version at equivalent efficiency. The data indicatedthat a better Nox-BTE trade-off was obtained as the pilot quantity was decreased and as the air-fuel ratio was increased.
