Throughout the world, governments and their people continue to struggle with the complexities of hazardous and toxic wastes which already exist, while they also attempt to control and minimize the discharge of more waste. Much of the hazardous waste which is most serious is not readily visible; that being waste which exists in the form of contaminated soil and groundwater. Most commonly, subsurface contamination exists in the form of petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and inorganic compounds. At many civilian and military facilities, petroleum hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds in the subsurface. However, advances in applied remediation technologies have resulted in proven remedies to successfully remove the source of subsurface contamination while effectively controlling its migration in the subsurface. Soil and groundwater remediation is expensive, yet we may soon recognize a completely new definition for the designation of "waste as these innovative methods of remediation can transform the contamination into "bankable' commodities.
