Shot peening is the most effective way to improve the fretting fatigue (FF) strength. This paper evaluates the effects of three factors, i.e. compressive residual stress, surface roughness and microstructure hardening in shot peedned surface on FF. The results show that residual stress and roughness are predominant in FF with the rectangular rig contact. Two kinds of commerical lubricants for post peening coating do not improve the FF resistance, since their processing reduce the compressive residual stress.
