We have synthesized lithiated nickel oxide-based cathode materials containing stocihiometric and excess ithium using a new low temperature colloidal particulate sol-gel process. The process yyields a xerogel precursor that transforms to the crystalline oxide at 800 deg C in 2h. We studied the Li environmet with unclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and that of the transition metal ions with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We measured samples of LiNi_(1-x)Co_xO_2, with x chemical bounds 0 and 0.25. The effect on each composition of the incroporation of 5 mol
