Integrated Management Systems: How a Service Contractor manages its Safety, Quality and Environmental Processes

As a service contractor to the steelindustry operating in 29 countries around the world,Heckett MultiServ has a wide diversity of safety,quality of service and environmental requirements andexpectations placed on us by both customers andnational legislation, as well as our own internal policies and standards.In response to these requirements and expectations, itwas found we were developing many differing systems,procedures, work instructions and training modules tocover basically the same services in our operatingsites and countries. This did not lend itself to theefficient monitoring, control, measurement andimprovement of on-site operating processes andstandardising training and development of our mostvaluable resource, our people.Following an in-depth evaluation of the needs andworking practices of the company, we have developed astandardised management system This 'Model ManagementSystem', which covers safety, quality of service andenvironmental process control, can and is beingprogressively adapted for use at every operating sitein our countries of operation.This paper serves to describe the approach taken,detail how the management system is organised and howit has found favour with customers, regulatoryauthorities and certification bodies.
