Optical measurement and data manipulation of droplet size distribution in two-phase flashing propane jets

A series of laser-based droplet size distribution measurements were undertaken in the near-field regions of a two-phase flashing propane jet, using a purpose-built small-scale jet release facility and a diffraction particle sizer. This is believed to be the first measurement of propane droplet size distribution by this method in these regions [1].Due to the optical severity of the measuring environment, the data obtained required detailed processing, manipulation, and analysis in order to extract useful size information from it. Even after the analysis, it was not possible to provide detailed andaccurate droplet size distribution measurements, only gross descriptions of the variation of the droplet size within the jet.Centreline and lateral profiles of relative droplet size distribution and obscuration were obtained and, despite the uncertainties, it is believed that the trends observed accurately represent the variation of droplet size within the jet, and reflect thejet behaviour.
