The cost effective production of near-net-shape PM titanium alloy components has been sought for decades and several research groups around the world are working on process methods to realize that goal. Promising work on hydrogen sintering and phase transformations (HSPT) has recently shown exceptional mechanical properties with near full density in commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V. The work presented here describes application oriented efforts to fabricate larger pieces than the small samples needed for oxygen testing, microstructure and tensile testing previously produced by this method. Plates with dimensions as high as 16 cm, as well as demonstration parts of more complex geometry, were successfully produced free of cracking or excessive distortion.
