Solid-solution powders of (Ti_(0.93)W_(0.07))(C_(0.7)N_(0.3)) and (Ti_(0.93)W_(0.07))C were synthesized via high energy ball milling and carbothermal reduction processes. After blending with specific amounts of Ni and other carbides, the cermets were prepared to study the effects of nitrogen and carbides on the microstructure and mechanical properties of (Ti_(0.93)W_(0.07))(C_(0.7)N_(0.3))-Ni and (Ti_(0.93)W_(0.07))C-Ni cermets. We observed a typical core/rim structure consisting of solid solution phases and found that nitrogen has a remarkable influence on the cermet microstructures. Further, by increasing other carbides, such as Mo_2C, hardness properties of these cermets were enhanced from 12.6 to 13.9 GPa. Also, the amounts of different elements in core, rim and binder were investigated and the results show that it changes dramatically with increase of carbides due to the elements affinity phenomena.
