The wear resistance of cold work tool steels is highly dependent on their hardness and on the composition, size and volume fraction of the primary precipitates (carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides) present in their microstructure. The corrosionresistance on the other hand depends on the content of the alloying elements chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen in the matrix.Two martensitic PM steels with large amounts of vanadium carbonitrides and/or titanium nitrides and high nitrogen contents were produced through hot isostatic pressing of nitrided powder mixed with VC or TiN. The wear and corrosion resistance propertiesof these advanced PM materials are presented and compared to those of commercially available conventional and PM produced tool steels used in the metal forming, food processing and plastics industries.
