Corrosion and wear resistant tool steel contains in wt.%: max. 0.3 C; max. 1.0 Si; max. 1.5 Mn; 13-20 Cr; 0.5-3 Mo; 1-35 N; just enough Nb and/or V and/or Ti for the stoichiometric fixing of the max. soluble amount of nitrogen in the matrix as nitrides and balance Fe plus usual impurities. The pref. composition is max. 0.1 C; max. 1.0 Si; max. 1.0 Mn, 14-17 Cr; 1-2 Mo; 1-35 N. The nitrogen content is either 1-1.6; 1.6-2.5 or 2.5-3.5. The steel has a martensitic structure. USE/ADVANTAGE - As powder metallurgically produced tool steel. No expensive chromium is lost in producing carbides. It is all used to increase the corrosion resistance of the steel. Steel has same corrosion resistance as prior art steels with higher Cr content.
