Brazilian high efficiency cold blast cupola for melting iron in which coke is fed directly into the coke bed, not along with metallic charge into the stack, was modelled and scientifically analysed to assess the combustion characteristics, fuel efficiency and exit gas analysis for pollution control. The model was developed using heat, mass and momentum balance equations in their differential form and solved using numerical techniques. This has enabled valuable insight into the melting process, furnace design and potential for further developments. Influence of the coke entry location into the furnace and proportion of coke added have been detailed to provide a flavour of this protocol.
