The demands for communication during product design and manufacturing process increases rapidly. Reasons for this process are the increasing complexity of products and the globalization of the design and manufacturing process in association with outsourcing. Other reasons are the growing applifica-tion of innovative design Technologies (CAD, rapid prototyping). Experts act more and more at different places. During research activities at the Otto-von-Guericke university of Magdeburg information flow at the design phase of technical products were analysed. The scientists examine, how multimedia communication technology can help to increase the efficiency of this information processes during teamwork of distributed experts. Technical and economical facts were analyzed. During the lecture the current state of asynchronous and synchronous communication technology is presented. Using selected examples, application solutions of multimedia-communication in the foundry were shown. Sample applications in product development, job scheduling, quality assurance, sale and management were explained. During that the application of innovative communication technologies and peripheral devices is explained. On this occasion experiences from several industrial projects of the Magdeburg university were discussed. Among the discussion of the technical and technological problems also economical aspects of the application of multimedia communication technology will be discussed.
