The third order nonlinear optical properties of a series of transition metal phthalocyanines were measured using degenerate four-wave mixing. The frequency doubled output of a Nd:YAG laser operating at 532 nm and 10 Hz with a pulse duration of 6ns was used in these experiments. Metal phthalocyanines consisting of ion, cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc from the forth period and silver land gold from group (11) were investigated. x{sup}3 values ranging from 1.63× l0{sup}-13 for Zn to7.36×l0{sup}-13 for Co were observed. Carbon disulfide was used as a reference.
