Some Experience in Rehabilitation of Urban Drainage Infrastructure and Sewage Treatment Systems in Germany

After the reunification of Germany (1989) the difference in drainage systems and treatment plants between the former German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD) became obvious. The structural and technical conditions of the drainage systems as well as most of the sewage treatment plants in the former DDR were extremely poor. The existing drainage systems had hydraulic as well as structural problems. In some large cities such as Dresden parts of the sewer systems were blocked by sediments, so that the hydraulic capacity was in some parts reduced to the dry weather flow.
