Powder coating technology has been in use for over three decades. Recently, this application method has been applied to manufacture of composite materials, specifically those with thermoplastic matrices. Through the use of the Electrostatic Fluidized Bed, it is now possible to economically manufacture most of the commonly used composite material forms, including, prepreg fabrics, fiber prepreg, prepreg braid, and unidirectional tape. In addition, these composite products can be readily manufactured with a large variety of matrix and substrate combinations. This paper will discuss a viable method for making, in particular, thermoplastic prepreg fabrics, and provide important tackground information necessary for understanding Electrostatic Fluidized Bed powder deposition technology.
