Sheet-molding composite, or SMC, has been a strong presence in the transportation industry for many years. SMC is used in automobiles, and light and heavy-duty trucks in a variety of applications. Exterior body panels, inner reinforcements, structural members, and under-the-hood parts. To continue growth, SMC suppliers must develop products to meet the changing needs of the original equipment manufacturers, or OEMS, and the ultimate consumer who purchases the finished product. SMC must enhance its value-added benefits while maintaining mechanical properties and aesthetics. In recent years, consumers have become concerned with recyclability of durable goods, such as transportation vehicles. To answer this, OEMs have required that SMC parts contain a certain level of recyclate. SMC materials suppliers have addressed this by developing new systems incorporating recycled feedstocks, utilizing either post-consumer or post-industrial scrap from various sources.
