The Executive Summary~(12) of the U.S. Senate's Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem, 1999, provides a valuable perspective on the Y2K problem and individual assessment of necessary actions. It is quoted, in part, below: "The Committee has found that the most frustrating aspect of… the Y2K problem is sorting fact from fiction. Reports from the most reliable news sources fall prey to polarizing forces-overemphasis (Y2K survivalists) or downplaying the event as a hoax. The good news is that the talk of the death of civilization… has been greatly exaggerated. The bad news is that Committee research has concluded that the Y2K problem is very real and that Y2K risk management efforts must be increased to avert serious disruptions. "As one examines the multiple layers of systems and technologies that support our everyday lives, the potential (for) Y2K problems increase exponentially. The interdependent nature of technology systems makes the severity of possible disruptions difficult to predict. Adding to the confusion, there are very few overall Y2K compliance assessments." (NOTE: even fewer assessments are independently audited and/or confirmed). Ready or not, Y2K will arrive on time and on schedule. Do you have a problem with the Millenium Bug?
