This paper is a brief description of the maintenance policy of Statkraft. It consists of three parts. First a presentation of Statkraft and the energy production division. Then objectives and strategies of the maintenance function, and in the end an outline of a new strategy. Statkraft has a long history but the descriptions in this paper are concentrated on the years from the liberalisation of the energy market in 1991 and up to the present. It describes how Statkraft successfully managed to readjust from administration, regulations and politics to sales, competition and the market. Objectives of maintenance are listed. The paper states the reason for these objectives and explains how they become real challenges when requirements for availability and safety are combined with the goal of being among the 20 percent with the lowest cost level. Statkraft has designed five legs of maintenance strategies to meet these challenges; Workforce, Organising, Optimising maintenance, Quality and Development. Each leg is dealt with. The company has carried through a benchmarking process, followed by organisational downsizing and restructuring. Then the benchmarking was repeated to ensure right course. Today Statkraft faces new challenges as Norway is about to become a part of a new North-European energy market. Requirements for availability are being changed, as they will be insufficient for the new production profiles. Statkraft will improve total availability by reducing the number of rehabilitation projects. Nearly ten years ago Statkraft stated the following thesis for the maintenance function; " more brainwork - less hands on ". They still find it valid.
