Antibacterial durg selection for skin infection is usually straight-forward because the pathogens of the skin have been well-documented and the bacteria have a rather predicable susceptibility pattern. However, recurrent infections cause frustration and there is confusion about preferences of one drug class over another. The most important aspect of treating skin infections is to understand the bacteria involved and the response of the skin to infection. It also is important to be familiar with drug distribution to the skin and how pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationships of drugs affect the patient's response. These and other factors will be considered below.
