Melatonin is an hormone synthesized in the pineal gland (mainly at night). It has been implicated in the regulation of a wide range of physiological and behavioral processes in a wide array of vertebrate species. These processes include modulation of reproduction, especially in those species which are seasonally reproductive, photoreception, thermoregulation, skin and pelage coloration and fur growth cycles. In man, clinical and basic research on the effects of melatonin involves anti-aging, antioxidant, oncostatic properties, sleeping disorders, jet lag syndrome, depression, and contraception.
