In the early history of the liquid noble gas spectrometers it was expected that their energy resolution would be similar to the resolution of semiconductor spectrometers. Then it became clear that the energy resolution was explained by the fluctuations of delta electrons. Apparently it is true in the low field region and for high LET particles. But now it is evident that for low LET particles and gammas and in the range of electric field where the best resolution can be obtained the energy resolution is not determined by known factors. In 1992 on the International Conference on Liquid Radiation Detectors the author presented the paper where the energy resolution of liquid rare gas gamma- and beta-spectrometers in the MeV region was analyzed↑(1). Five years have gone. It's high time now to analyze the situation.
