Ebara Corporation manufactures various high pressure centrifugal pumps with a wide range of specifications: discharge pressure ranging from 70 to 420 kgf/cm{sup}2 and shaft power from 1,000 to 20,000 kw. Since in the course of operation the intake temperature of these pumps varies from room temperature to close to saturation temperature (approx. 200°C), plant facilities for performance validation testing of the pumps must be able to create a wide range of stable fluid conditions. There existtesting systems which meet these requirements - such as systems using the cavitation limit test - but they are not fully automated, requiring delicate adjustments by skilled operators, and are therefore time-consuming. Other complicating factors arevariation in process gain, and the mutual interaction of system-internal process variables, both consequences of the broad operating condition range. Joint development by Ebara Corp. and Yamatake-Honeywell has now produced and validated a high-performance control system which by adding a process control simulation system to the conventional automatic control system, fully automates the test process. In this system, control is simulated before actual testing, to determine the optimum control parameters. This paper presents outlines of the high pressure pump test system plant and process control simulator, as well as a comparison of the results of simulated and actual operation.
