Erosion in control valves is a serious problem in industrial plant operations. Erosion tests with high pressure water are conducted under a valve inlet pressure of 20 MPa for industrial control valves, corresponding to conditions in industrialpower stations. Typical factors of erosion are investigated experimentally. On materials of valve trims, the resistance to erosion is clarified in the increasing order of brass, SUS316, SUS630, SUS440C and stellite no.6. On the other factors, the followingfacts are recognized: With a high valve opening and low outlet pressure, the mass loss of erosion increases drastically. Erosion features on various shaped plugs suggest that a desirable plug shape is needed to prevent erosion. Deoxygen treatment alsosuppresses erosion. These results can be applied to control valve technology in estimating valve life and judging operation failure.
