An intake model test and a flow analysis were performed on the pump suction sump of a certain power station (250 MW× 2, PFBC). The test was carried out to assist in the design of the most suitable suction sump, where two circulating water pumpseach with a bellmouth diameter of 2,700 mm and a capacity of 35,000 m{sup}3/hr are installed. Air entraining vortices were observed at the medium velocity under the similarity condition. These vortices disappeared due to an improvement in the sumpconfiguration inserting baffle plate by trial and error using flow analysis. The flow analysis simulated effectively the results of the model test.
