Ultraviolet irradiation of self-assembled monolayers of cis- and ?ra>u-4-cyano-4'-(10-thiodecoxy)-stilbene on a poly crystalline gold surface results in visual surface patterning as a consequence of pronounced changes in the surface hydrophobicity induced by photochemical geometric isomerization. The metal surface influences the efficiency of the photoconversion but does not completely quench excited state reactivity.
