Electrolytes containing magnesium organo compounds were characterized with regard to a possible application in secondary magnesium cells. The investigation focused on the behaviour of the negative electrode in Grignard reagent solutions. Here the reoxidation rate depends on the morphology of the magnesium deposit which is controlled by the substrate material. Using silver or gold substrates a nearly complete electrochemical reoxidation and a good storage behaviour of the magnesium deposit were observed. However simple Grignard reagent solutions have some crucial drawbacks, such as their low conductivity and poor oxidation stability. Therefore, more sophisticated magnesium organo compounds are needed for battery application.
