Conservation and breeding of black poplar (Populus nigra L.) in the Ukraine

Of the fast-growing tree species, black poplar (Populus nigra L.) and its hybrids are the promising source of pulpwood and other timber products. In the Ukraine, only 14 percent of which is covered by forests, this species has been used in breeding programmes for a long time. Populus nigra occurs as scattered individual trees or small groups of trees over the whole territory of the Ukraine, excluding mountain regions.
