Genetic Principles Underlying Maintenance of Tropical Fruit Crops

With many crop species, the variants of single genes (alleles) existing in subdivided populations are targeted to be sampled and maintained in genetic conservation. With clonal crops, the genetic integrity of specific genotypes, representing certain combination of genes which produce the desirable phenotypes, are often considered to be the basic units of genetic diversity to be collected and maintained. The following presentation attempts to reveal the basic genetic principles and terms related to these two approaches for sampling and maintaining genetic diversity.
