Transducer selection and placement are important for the proper operation of a process monitoring system. Opposing transducer resolution and process operation constraints must be balanced. This paper develops optimal transducer placement for the fine blanking process and demonstrates its capability by detecting tooling condition. Press mounted transducers are compared to transducers mounted in the tooling for measurement accuracy and resolution. Performance is demonstrated by detecting insufficient lubrication of the process and tool failure.
