This review is concerned with some basicstudies of plasma heat transfer and with the effectswhich the results of these studies may have onapplications. As typical examples of applications, heattransfer to the walls of a cascaded arc and toparticulates injected into thermal plasmas will bediscussed, including the results of a unified theory forparticle heating. As an example of the effects ofmagnetic fields on plasma heat transfer, some recentresults of a r.f. plasma sintering experiment will bereported which revealed unexpected asymmetry of heattransfer to the sintering sample and to the walls of the reactor vessel.The last section of this review will be concerned withexperimental and analytical studies of the anode regionand with anode heat transfer in high intensity,free-burning arcs which is of interest in the contextof arc welding and cutting. The results of these studies show that compared toconventional heat transfer, plasma heat transfer is muchmore complex due to the presence of charged particles,extremely steep gradients and the associated deviationsfrom chemical and/or kinetic equilibrium, and the presence of magnetic fields.
