Professor Julian Szekely's Research: The MIT Years

This paper selectively reviews ProfessorJulian Szekely's research contributions in the twodecades since he joined MIT. The paper describesSzekely's research strategy and style and examines howhe developed understanding of disparate materialsprocessing systems while maintaining a unifying focuson fluid flow phenomena. Szekely's interdisciplinaryskill is demonstrated by his ability to simultaneouslystudy electromagnetically driven flows, gas stirredmelts, transport phenomena in plasmas, solidifyingsystems, multiphase phenomena in packed beds andindustrial ecology. It is suggested that Szekely's workconstitutes a foundation and a lasting contribution tothe burgeoning discipline of mathematical modeling of materials processing.
