A critical element in a polymer processing operationis the injection of the polymer into the mold. An analysis of thisstep requires computational algorithms that can track the fillingfront-the polymer/gas interface. This is a basic free surfaceproblem which can be readily tackled on employing many of thetechniques developed for the analysis of solidification phasechange-an area where Professor Szekely made important contributions.This paper presents a number of free surface techniques that canbe used to track the filling front during the injection of polymerinto a mold. All of the techniques presented are closely related toexisting techniques used in the analysis of solidification processes.
