Modeling Activities in Steelmaking at Mefos

The existing models in steelmaking used inthe Swedish steel companies are mainly dealing withtemperature-time predictions, simple prediction ofalloy and deoxidant additions etc. During the last threeyears the Swedish Steel Producers Association hassponsored a number of project with the aim of predictingthe heat and fluid flow conditions during stirring ina ladle and in the tundish. The aim is to increase theknowledge of mainly velocity, temperature andturbulence variations in the ladle and the tundish. Thisinformation is though to be necessary in order to developmore realistic models of separation of non-metallicinclusions, reoxidation between top slag and steel,reoxidation between refractory and steel etc. A 3-Dmodel of an induction-stirred ladle including the slagphase has been developed. This model has been found topredict steel velocities that are in good agreement withplant measurements. A 3-D, 3 phase model of a gas-stirredladle has also been developed. This model also predictssteel surface velocities that agree well withmeasurements done in pilot plant as well as plant scale.The model of a gas-stirred ladle can be used for anygeometry, injection of gas from two nozzles, and forvacuum conditions. The tundish modeling efforts has beenfocused on careful verification of predicted data withexperimental data from plant measurements. Steelvelocities, temperatures in lining, steel and tundishflux, emissivities of tundish flux have been measured.
