Setting Research Priorities For A National Measurement Programme: The Biggest Bang For The Tax-Payer's Buck

At the National Measurement System Directorate we are keen to spend the ￡50 million annual measurement science budget as wisely as possible. To do this we need to know how much the UK will benefit from any proposed research project or knowledge transfer programme. We believe that the work we fund can benefit the UK in two main ways: by increasing company profits and by improving citizens' quality of life. This paper describes the tools we have developed to help us get the best value possible for the tax-payers' money, and how we hope to develop these tools in future.
