The Impact of New International Quality Standards on Metrology

In recent years the European Community (EC) has developed new EC directives which followed the program: "The New Approach to Technical Harmonization and Standards". In this new approach each member has to fulfil the EC directives in various areas. Directives for metrology are presently in preparation. The approach ensures certification in two areas important to the field of calibration: 1: Quality Assurance Requirements, specifically the ISO 9000 series. 2: Product certification in accordance with the European accreditation structure. Certification and inspection bodies will use the criteria of the European EN 45000 standards based on ISO guidelines. These standards influence practices in areas inside and outside of Europe, such as North America and Asia. They impact organizations which do or intend to do business in the EC.
