The concept of privatization of government facilities and functions has become very popular and standards laboratories have not been excluded from this initiative. In 1993, the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) committee determined that most functions performed at Newark Air Force Base would be privatized, including the Air Force Primary Standards Laboratory (AFPSL). There is much to be gained by reviewing the privatization process which includes: contractual requirements, transition from public to private operation, quality assurance, and government expectations. Wyle has successfully accomplished the transition with greater than 99% customer satisfaction. Process insights could help guide future standards laboratory privatization.
