The certification of gage blocks by comparison is a time-consuming process. Multiple block handling introduces repeatability, operator and thermal errors. These problems can produce a wide distribution of readings between various laboratories for the same set of blocks. This paper will describe the development of a laser based, direct reading gage block system. A lower degree of uncertainty is targeted because the gage does not require individual master sets for comparison. This concept also reduces the influence of the operator and makes the measurement process more efficient.
