Density Determination of Reference Mass Standards

Mass, pressure and force metrology often require the density of an artefact to be known. Besides other aspects the new OIML recommendation for weights R 111 sets out demands on the knowledge of the density of weights. The paper presents a newly developed method of density determination especially suited for large artefacts. The method is fast and accurate and density determination can be achieved cheaper than with comparable techniques. The basic requirements are a liquid of known density, a vessel of constant adjustable volume and a platform balance both of suitable size. The technique is also capable to determine the porosity or density of samples of different material.
