Determination of the absorbed dose and dose equivalent delivered by ionizing radiation is a fundamental objective for those working in the fields of occupational and environmental radiation protection. Measurements of ionizing radiation for these purposes are required to be traceable to national standards because they may affect the health and safety of radiation workers or members of the general public. Methods used for the metrology of ionizing radiation differ somewhat from those in other fields. However, many activities in the radiological calibration laboratory are common to all calibration laboratories. Measurement quality assurance and accreditation are two topics of current interest.
