Recent progress in the study of stoichiometry, kinetics and regulation of metabolism and growth of animal cell cultures

A number of factors have been reported to affect the growth and metabolism of animal cells in bioreactors. Uncertainties and controversies exist regarding the relative importance of these factors. Recently, quantitative and comparative studies of different cell lines grown under diverse conditions have substantially augmented our understanding and clarified some of the controversies. Stoichiometric and kinetic relationships were derived for an improved control of cell physiology. More importantly, some not yet identified medium components and factors produced by the cells have been demonstrated to the critical for the growth, death and product formation of animal cell culture. They have implications for process optimization and development. Some of these recent advances are summarized in this paper. Further research needs are also discussed.
