Selection of central door locking system for InterCity coaches

This paper describes the process that interfleet Technology (formerly InterCity fleet Engineering) undertook to develop a system of secondary door locking to be installed onto all InterCity passenger carrying vehicles. Two different system designs were produced and evaluated against criteria of cost per life saved and through life costing of the systems. Field trials proved the principle of the system for installation on to 1845 vehicles of 42 different types. This process, from the initial design studies to completion of installation, had to be accomplished within a 3.5 year period with the minimum of disruption to the passenger service.
