Compliance with EMC Directive 89/336/EEC: A strategy for off-highway vehicles

From January 1st 1996, European Union law requires that all products placed on the market, containing electrical and/or electronic components, must satisfy the EMC requirements of Directive 89/336/EEC. Failure to comply may result in the withdrawal and prohibition of that product from the market. The Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), a competent body for 89/336/EEC certification, has developed an EMC test strategy for off-highway vehicles intended for the European market. This paper describes the background to the new legislation and the routes to compliance. Details of the strategy are presented, along with a case study report, describing the progress through it, of one manufacturer, J C Bamford Excavators Ltd.
