The present paper deals with the interaction of two different piled coplanar cracks, an internal crack and a surface crack, which are located in a bending plate. In this case, the two cracks are compared with a single semi-elliptical envelope surface crack. Elastic and elasto-plastic analyses are made, using 2D and 3D finite elements calculations, to evaluate the effect of the ligament located between the two cracks. Several simplified methods are used and compared with numerical computations. It is shown that the ligament has good mechanical resistance until initiation and its effect is quantified.
