The effect of the QUICK scheme on numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations was investigated through solving the problem of the flow past a square cylinder contained in a channel. The numerical results show that the original QUICK scheme may introduce spurious solutions to the problem. Two asymmetric periodic solutions are observed at Re = 1000, which have the same Strouhal number and amplitude, but are obtained with different small perturbations. After the QUICK scheme is modified with a simple interpolation limiter, the spurious solutions are suppressed and a single solution is obtained. It is concluded that the QUICK scheme should be used with caution for solving highly convective flows.
