A Propsal for a Set of Aggregated Indicators of the Environmental Dimension of Sustainability

The concept of .sustainable development was accepted unanimously by the global community of nations (cf. Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, UNCI'D 1992). Its substance, however, is not much more than an indication of a general direction. It is a "lowest common denominator", the broadest outline of the developmental policy of nations, By no means is it a definite comprehensive strategy or a blueprint for a new sustainable world. Sustainability has meanings different for different regioas and nations.
