Amyloid diseases such as Alzheimer's and type II diabetes are becoming of increasing concern in societies in which people are enjoying longer and more affluent lives (the latter leading to increasing obesity problems which predispose to conditions including type II diabetes). Amyloid diseases are believed to result from aggregation of misfolded proteins into β-sheet assemblies termed amyloid.
