The performance of coatings prepared ftom one-component waterborne polyurethane dispersions is generally inferior to one- or two-component cross-linked films in terms of chemical resistance and mechanical durability, particularly in soft-touch coatings. By incorporation of double bond functionality via reacting polyester acrylates into the backbone of the polymer we can greatly reduce cure time of these films to as little as three minutes (elevated flash off temperature, UV cure) Beyond that, the additional crosslinking effected by UV-cure imparts a new level of chemical and mechanical resistance while maintaining the desired soft feel More so than solventbome and/or acrylic monomer containing systems, UV-Curable PUDs are environmentally friendly since they are reduced in water.
